Jose Carlos Sánchez (Jay Kalo) was born in Havana (Cuba) on September 15, 1997. He began his musical career at the age of 10 and studied percussion at the Cuban National Art School (ENA).

He obtained first place in the International Drum Festival in Cuba, on two consecutive occasions.

At only 17 years old, his first trip was to New York, to perform with the "Big Band Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra" where he met and played with Wynton Marsalis.

When he finished his studies, he began to play and record with many national and international artists, such as Alain Pérez (album "El cuento de la buena pipa"), Omara Portuondo ("Barranquijazz" jazz festival, Colombia), Maria del Mar Bonet ("Ultramar" tour) and among others.
